Let’s Learn English -2022 Edition

One of the things that I do when I first meet someone from another country is to encourage them to learn the language. You may ask, why? Here are three reasons:

  1. English is the language of the US and if you want to live here you need to learn it.
  2. It will help you get a better job, and succeed in life, which is the main reason why we all come to this country.
  3. It will help you know and understand what this country is all about and you may end up studying a trade or get a degree, which eventually will help you in the long run.

Here are some resources for you to encourage others, volunteer if you can and/or maybe learn the language. The following list is broken down in the following categories:

In person, Online, On-Your-Own, and College level learning. At the bottom of the page you will find resources for English Learners

In Person

Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County

Classes: one-to-one tutoring, Conversations groups

Where: Hillsborough Library, Bound Brook Library, Manville Library and via Zoom

Somerset County Library System Locations:

Where: Bridgewater Library; Bound Brook Memorial Library; Hillsborough Public Library; Manville Library; Mary Jacobs Library; North Plainfield Memorial Library; Somerville Public Library; and Warren Township Library

Times and Dates: Tuesday, September 13, 2022 – Saturday, November 19, 2022.

Hunterdon Educational Services Commission (EOC)

Where: Flemington, Somerville, Franklin, Somerset and Bound Brook

Times and Dates: Starting in the Fall of 2022

Online

Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County

Classes: one-to-one tutoring, Conversations groups

Where: Via Zoom

Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC)

RVCC offers free classes in literacy and English language skills to help individuals prepare for employment in the food service industry. Fall classes will be held remotely, via Zoom.

On-Your-Own

Here a two applications that you can use and practice English on your own:

Mango

If you are a member of the Somerset County Library System, then you can use this app for free

Click “Mango Languages.” Then click “Sign up” and create your username and password. You will need your SCLS Id information. You can start using the app once you are signed up.

Duolingo

You can use this app to learn language on your own. It is free, but if you want to advance and learn more then you will need to subscribe and pay their fees.

Babbel

This is another app you can use. You will need to sign up and then start using the app. Some fees may apply.

College Level Learning

Maybe you would like to have a have a career, learn a trade or go to college in the future, then the best way to start is with this college level ESL classes.

There is a cost: $336 per course and there are a total of 5 courses. Speak with Pastor Dan regarding a Scholarship for this program. Classes are in person at RVCC campus.
